What to know
A judgment, a short order, an appeal decision, and proof of finality may be different documents. Confirm what the recipient will actually use.
Identify court, case number location, decision date, finality notation, and later orders.
Distinguish factual findings from operative orders and dissenting or procedural text.
Ask whether the complete judgment or a certified extract is required.
Document guide
These notes help you describe your request. The receiving organization’s current instructions should guide the final requirements.
A court decision may contain a caption, procedural history, findings, reasoning, operative order, costs, appeal instructions, and annexes. Some recipients need the entire certified decision; others specify particular pages or an official extract. Obtain the instruction in writing before requesting an excerpt. A partial translation should be clearly identified as partial and should never imply that omitted sections have no effect.
Look for a file-stamped date, seal, signature, amendment, appeal, or separate certificate of finality. A decision date alone does not establish that the judgment is final, enforceable, or recognized in Slovakia. Supply any later order or status certificate requested by the receiving body. Legal counsel or the competent authority must answer recognition and enforcement questions.
The European e-Justice Portal describes a specific EU framework for recognition and enforcement of civil and commercial judgments between Member States, including a certificate concerning a judgment. That framework should not be assumed for a U.S. decision or for every family, criminal, or administrative matter. Tell the Slovak recipient the issuing country, court, case type, and intended use, then ask which decision, certificate, and translations its procedure requires.
For enforcement of a covered civil or commercial judgment given in one EU Member State in another, Article 42 of Regulation (EU) No 1215/2012 calls for an authentic copy of the judgment and an Article 53 certificate. The enforcement authority may request a translation of the certificate where necessary, and may request a translation of the judgment only if it cannot proceed without one. Separately, Article 43 can let the person against whom enforcement is sought request a judgment translation to contest enforcement if its language conditions are met. Ask the competent authority which language and documents it needs for your case before ordering a full translation. These rules do not establish the requirements for a U.S. judgment, a family or criminal decision, or a different use of the document.
The decision may refer to a settlement, schedule of property, parenting arrangement, damages calculation, or earlier order. Tell us which attachments are incorporated and whether the recipient requires them translated. Names, parties’ roles, case references, amounts, dates, and cross-references must be handled consistently across the package. A divorced person may instead need a specific divorce decree or registration record; ask the recipient which one.
Provide the court jurisdiction, document type, total pages, any attachments, receiving office, required translation form, and filing deadline. Do not put parties’ names, allegations, medical facts, or a case number into the initial quote form. Translation communicates the source wording; it does not replace legal review.

Frequently asked
Answers to common questions before you request a quote.
That depends on the recipient. A limited translation should be clearly identified as an excerpt.
Only if the recipient expressly accepts an excerpt. The final page may omit the operative order, qualifications, appeal information, or material incorporated by reference.
Not automatically under Article 42 of Regulation (EU) No 1215/2012. The authority may request the certificate translation where necessary and the judgment translation if it cannot proceed without it. Article 43 can also permit a translation request to contest enforcement under its stated conditions. Confirm that this EU route applies and ask the competent authority exactly what it requires.
No. The EU civil-and-commercial framework described by the European e-Justice Portal is a specific cross-border route. Ask the Slovak receiving authority or a qualified lawyer which procedure applies to your judgment and what documents need translation.
No. Recognition and enforcement are separate legal questions for the relevant authority or lawyer.
