Document: Marriage License. Include the approximate length, recipient, and deadline if you know them. We’ll review your request and may contact you by email about next steps.
What to know
The word “license” can appear before a ceremony, on a completed return, or within a later official record.
Distinguish an application, issued license, return, and final marriage certificate.
Names, date of issue, solemnization details, and officiant signatures may appear on different parts.
Ask the Slovak recipient which completed record it wants as evidence of marriage.
Document guide
These notes help you describe your request. The receiving organization’s current instructions should guide the final requirements.
Identify the issuing U.S. state or other jurisdiction and whether the file is a license application, issued license, completed license return, or marriage certificate. Include both sides and any attached certification page. Dates of issue, ceremony, filing, and registration can differ; translate the dates and labels actually present. Do not infer that a ceremony occurred from an uncompleted license.
New York City is one example: its guidance says the couple receives a license before the ceremony, the officiant returns the signed license afterward, and the city issues a Certificate of Marriage Registration. Other states can use different forms and names. If the Slovak recipient asks for proof of an existing marriage, request its exact document requirement and ask the issuing office how to obtain that completed record before ordering a translation of a blank or unreturned license.
For registering a U.S. marriage involving a Slovak citizen, the Slovak Embassy in Washington lists an apostilled foreign marriage certificate with an official Slovak translation. It does not describe a pre-ceremony license as a substitute. Ask the Embassy or the responsible registry about your specific document, prior-marriage records, authentication route, and translation form. A bank, school, or another private recipient may ask for something different.
State the issuing jurisdiction, printed document title, whether the ceremony and filing are complete, number of pages, recipient, and deadline. Do not paste the couple’s names, birth dates, addresses, license number, or scan into the initial public quote form. A translation cannot turn a license into proof that the marriage was registered.
