Document: Police Clearance Certificate. Include the approximate length, recipient, and deadline if you know them. We’ll review your request and may contact you by email about next steps.
What to know
A national criminal record, an FBI report, and a state or local police letter come from different authorities and may not meet the same filing requirement.
Identify the issuing agency, covered jurisdiction, issue date, and whether the document has an attached explanation.
Check all result wording, limitations, reference numbers, seals, and any reverse-side information.
Ask the recipient whether it imposes a maximum document age or requires an authenticated original.
Document guide
These notes help you describe your request. The receiving organization’s current instructions should guide the final requirements.
Ask the Slovak receiving office which country’s record it requires, which authority should issue it, and how recent the result must be. The Slovak Embassy’s citizenship-by-descent checklist separately identifies an FBI Identity History Summary and records from other relevant countries. A state or municipal clearance should not be substituted for a federal report unless that office expressly accepts it.
A clearance can include a cover letter, verification code, seal, signature, explanatory legend, or continuation pages. Tell us whether the receiving office asks for the full document, a printed electronic result, or a certified copy. For an FBI Identity History Summary, the FBI says individuals cannot request its certified-copy service; ask the Slovak office what form it actually means. Do not remove a page merely because it has little visible text. The exact source and required attachments affect the translation scope.
If an apostille is requested, the issuing authority determines the route. The U.S. Department of State lists FBI background checks among federal documents it handles for apostilles; state-issued records use a different route. The apostille authenticates the eligible public document and does not replace Slovak translation. Ask the recipient whether the authentication page must also be translated.
Provide the issuer, country, issue date, page count, recipient, exact translation requirement, and deadline. Do not enter a result, identification number, date of birth, or criminal-history details in the public form. We can agree on how to review a legible file after the scope is established.
Compare the routes
The words “police clearance” do not identify an issuing authority. Read the name on the record and ask the Slovak recipient which level of check it requires.
AuthenticationThe FBI says its authenticated result can be sent to the U.S. Department of State for an apostille if one is required.
TranslationIdentify it as an FBI record and include every page the recipient asks to have translated.
AuthenticationAsk the issuing state about authentication if the Slovak recipient requests it; the federal FBI apostille route is not a blanket route for state documents.
TranslationName the state agency and confirm the recipient accepts a state-level result before requesting translation.
AuthenticationCheck with the issuing body and receiving office whether authentication is available or needed.
TranslationIdentify the local issuer and ask whether this letter meets the recipient’s request; translation cannot expand its coverage.
How it works
Tell us what the document is, who needs the Slovak translation, and when you need it. The first form does not require a file.
Choose the type and tell us where the translation will be used.
Include the approximate length, deadline, and any instructions from the recipient.
We review the request and may contact you by email if more detail is needed.
Frequently asked
Answers to common questions before you request a quote.
No. They have different issuing authorities and coverage. Ask the Slovak recipient which one it requires for your procedure.
The FBI notes that its Identity History Summary is sometimes called a police clearance, but that label also appears on other records. Ask the receiving office to name the issuing level and country, then describe your actual document in the quote request.
Ask the recipient whether it wants the authentication page in Slovak too. Mention all attached pages in the quote request.
