Confirm who is allowed to prepare and submit the letter

Check the actual recipient’s language and submission rules before paying to translate a referee’s letter; some Slovak programs already accept English.

01

Source record

Check letterhead, date, author role, signature, and any confidential designation.

02

Reader and purpose

Tone and evaluative phrases should retain strength without adding praise not in the source.

03

Quote details

Ask whether the recipient accepts applicant-supplied translations or requires a direct letter from the referee.

What to check before ordering

These notes help you describe your request. The receiving organization’s current instructions should guide the final requirements.

Check whether Slovak is actually required

Identify the recipient, exact program or role, deadline, permitted language, and submission method. For example, SAIA’s published National Scholarship Programme instructions for incoming university students accept attachments in either Slovak or English and ask for two recommendations from university teachers. An English letter for that particular application does not need an English-to-Slovak translation under those instructions. Another university, employer, or scholarship may have different rules, so check its current requirements rather than assuming every Slovak recipient requires Slovak.

Identify the author and complete record

If the recipient does require Slovak and permits translation, include the final signed letter, author role and relationship to the applicant, issue date, letterhead, signature block, reference number, and any attached rating form. SAIA’s student scholarship instructions, for example, specify a signature, author position and contact details, institutional identification if there is no letterhead, and a three-month age limit at the application deadline. Those details are program-specific. Preserve the strength and limitations of the recommendation, comparative language, and reservations; a translation should not improve praise, remove caveats, or imply that a draft was signed.

Agree how confidentiality will be protected

Ask the author or recipient who may see the source and translated version, who will authorize the work, and how the final letter must reach the recipient. A confidential portal link should not be forwarded casually. If the applicant cannot access the letter, the recommender or institution can explain an approved workflow. Translation does not replace the writer’s own endorsement or a recipient’s verification.

Describe scope without sharing the assessment

Give recipient type, language instruction, approximate pages, letter and form count, permitted submitter, required format, and deadline. Do not paste names, private evaluations, or the letter itself into the public quote form. A suitable authorized review channel can be arranged if a translation is actually allowed.

Common questions

Answers to common questions before you request a quote.

Does an English recommendation always need Slovak translation?

No. SAIA’s published National Scholarship Programme instructions for incoming university students accept English attachments. Check the rules for your exact recipient and application before ordering a translation.

Can I send a confidential recommendation to a translator myself?

Ask the author and recipient who may access the letter and how an authorized translation should be submitted. If the applicant cannot see the source, the author or institution can arrange the permitted process.

Can the translation strengthen the writer’s opinion?

No. It should convey the writer’s actual assessment, including any qualifications or reservations.
